There’s a particular kind of disappointment that comes with a sliding door. It isn’t dramatic. The door works. It slides. It’s just that after a year or so, it starts to feel different — heavier, rougher, less willing. And by then, the person who installed it has moved on to the next job.

A kitchen aluminium sliding door is where this shows up most often, simply because the kitchen works the hardware harder than any other room. An interior aluminium sliding door in a bedroom or study is under less pressure. Same design, different duty cycle.

Where the Money Goes

Rollers. That’s the short answer to why some doors last and some don’t.

Nylon or polyurethane running on sealed bearings — that’s the specification to look for. It isn’t complicated. What happens in practice is that cheaper options get substituted at the quotation stage, often without the buyer noticing, because the difference isn’t visible. Unsealed bearings, lower-grade compounds, thinner housings. In a showroom, on a display panel that gets used a few times a day, none of this shows. Under real conditions — a kitchen door opening fifteen or twenty times a day, carrying a panel that weighs what it weighs — the gap emerges fast.

The failure mode is consistent. A grinding sensation develops. Adjustment doesn’t help, because nothing is out of alignment. Cleaning the track doesn’t help either, though people try. The roller itself has degraded. Replacement means removing the panel from the track, which is a two-person job on most residential doors. It’s the kind of thing that could have been avoided at the ordering stage for very little cost.

Top-hung or bottom-track is the other decision that can’t be revisited. Top-hung keeps the floor clear, which in a kitchen is a genuine benefit — no channel to clean around, nothing to trip over, one less surface collecting debris. Bottom-track supports heavier panels with less deflection. The limit isn’t a fixed number; it depends on the profile system and how the panel is constructed. Suppliers who know their product will state it. Suppliers who don’t will say something vague.

Soft-close — worth it with children, otherwise a preference. Concealed track — cleaner line, reduced service access. Neither is a straight upgrade.

The Seal Does the Actual Work

A sliding door that doesn’t seal isn’t a door. It’s a partition with a gap around it. Air moves through that gap, and odour moves with the air. This is the reason most kitchen sliding doors fail at their primary job, and the panel itself is almost never at fault.

Two minutes with a smoke pen at handover will show whether the seal is doing anything. A candle works too. Run the flame along the frame edges — where the panel meets the frame, where the frame meets the wall. If the flame bends, there’s a path for air. This needs to be resolved before the job is accepted.

A properly sealed door will still release some smell when it opens. That’s not a defect. But closed, it should hold.

Glass

Clear for light. Fluted for privacy with brightness — it’s having a moment, and it does diffuse light well. Frosted for privacy with a flatter appearance. Tinted for glare and darker palettes.

Easy-clean coating in a kitchen is not an optional extra in any meaningful sense. Cooking vapour lands on glass and stays there. Uncoated, that means regular wiping. Coated, it wipes off in one pass. The difference is small in theory and large in practice.

Applications

Kitchen to dining. Living room to study. Bedroom to closet — usually fluted or frosted. Bathroom dry-wet — feasible, but the track should be kept away from direct water. Aluminium is fine with moisture. The hardware isn’t.

Colour

Black frames are the default at the moment. Industrial, minimalist, easy to match. White has less visual weight. Wood grain transfer — request a physical sample, because printed representations don’t reliably predict how it will look. Champagne gold is specific to certain interiors and incongruous in others. Matching window frames and cabinet hardware is worth the effort. Mismatched finishes are the most common regret.

Maintenance

Track cleaning every two months. Not annually — every two months. Most rough-running doors are dirty, not worn out. Debris in the channel is the usual culprit. Silicone lubricant on the guides once a year. Oil-based products attract dust and make things worse. Gaskets harden and lose effectiveness even when they look intact. Replacement is cheap and restores the seal.

FAQ

Can an aluminium sliding door block cooking odours? A closed, well-sealed door reduces the spread of fumes and odours. It works best alongside mechanical ventilation, not as a replacement.

Which glass suits a kitchen sliding door? Clear tempered glass is the usual choice. Fluted or frosted glass works where privacy matters more.

Are aluminium sliding doors suitable for bathrooms? Yes. Aluminium is corrosion-resistant and moisture-proof, which makes it more durable than timber in humid conditions.

How often should tracks be cleaned? Every two months. Apply silicone lubricant annually.
